Celestron AstroMaster 70AZ
The honest $150 start. No shame in starting here.
around $110
A 70mm refractor on a simple mount — the classic answer to 'what's a cheap first telescope?' for a decade. It won't beat an 8-inch Dob, obviously, but the Moon looks fantastic and there's zero learning curve. If the hobby doesn't stick, you're out the price of a nice dinner.

Why we like it
- Very affordable entry point
- Refractor — no collimation ever
- Lightweight and portable
Keep in mind
- 70mm limits deep-sky views
- Basic mount is wobbly at high power
- You'll outgrow it
